    1. Pre-paint all lumber using "Heartthrob".

    2. Cut two pieces of a 2 x 4 to three foot lengths.

    3. Cut two pieces of 2 x 4 to 33 inches. Form a 3' x 3' box (figure G) using angle brackets and wood screws.

    4. Cut another 2 x 4 to 33 inches for a support beam. Attach to the inside of the box at the center using 2 x 4 joist hanger brackets and screws.

    5. Cut a 4' x 8' piece of plywood to 3' x 3', and then place on top of the box. Attach with finish nails around the perimeter (figure H).

    6. With the loft bed in place, slide the 3' x 3' fire pole platform flush against the wall, and then flush with the 4' x 4' posts on the right side of the bed.

    7. Measure the distance between the floor and the ceiling to determine the height of the pole. Subtract 4-1/4 inches from the ceiling height as this will be the length of the pole. Note: Most home improvement stores will cut and thread this length for you.

    8. Twist the flanges onto the bottom and top of the pole, and then place onto the center of the platform. Using a level, make sure the pole is perfectly straight and centered. Drill into the platform and ceiling stud with heavy-duty screws (figure I).

Alternate: If the ceiling studs don't correspond to the placement of your bed, cut a piece of plywood to 32" x 32", and then screw into the ceiling at the stud points (every stud should be 16 inches on center). Screw the flange into the plywood on the ceiling for a secure fit. Remember to subtract 3/4 inches from the pole length to accommodate for the plywood.

    9. For added safety and a soft landing, place soft foam matting at the base of the pole platform. Trim away any excess with a matte knife.
