    Materials

    1 4"x8"x3/4" piece of plywood
    1 21-1/2"x30"x4" upholstery foam
    35"x45" piece of fabric
    staple gun
    30" piano hinge
    safety hinge
    wave-shaped handles
    small craft letters
    double-sided tape
    4 castors
    3/4" wood screws
    wood glue
    finish nails
    wood filler

    1. Cut the plywood into the following sizes: two pieces 30" x 20", two pieces 20" x 20", one piece 21-1/2" x 30", and one piece 20" x 28-1/2".

    2. Make a basic rectangle by placing the 20" x 20" pieces between the 30" x 20" pieces. Attach them together with wood glue and finish nails to form a four-sided box.

    3. Attach the 20" x 28-1/2" piece into the bottom of the four-sided box with wood glue and finish nails.

    4. Add wood filler to the nail holes, and then sand (figure F) and paint the sides using the original wall color "Raindrop".

    5. After the paint is dry, draw a 22" x 12" rectangle centered on the front of the toy chest. Paint this rectangle with "Easy Green".

    6. After the rectangle is dry, add a two inch painted border all the way around the "Easy Green" using "Cilantro".

    7. Using wood glue, attach the foam to the 21-1/2" x 30" top piece.

    8. When the foam and plywood top is dry, place the fabric on top of the foam--wrong-side down. Wrap the edges around the underneath side of the wood, and then staple the fabric (figure G) in place as you work your way around the edges. Be sure to miter the corners, like a square or "hospital corner" folding bed linens.

    9. Attach the cushioned top to the chest using a 30" piano hinge (figure H).

    10. Add decorative wave-style handles from a hardware store.

    11. Install a safety hinge inside the bench to prevent small fingers from getting caught when they retrieve toys.

    12. Add craft letters, painted "Cilantro". Attach the letters using double-sided tape. In this project, two small crabs purchased from a craft store where also attached.

    13. Attach castors with a lock-wheel feature to all four corners of the bottom of the toy chest. Simply pre-drill pilot holes, and then attach them with 3/4 inch wood screws.
