These shadow boxes add dimension and function to the wall.
    Paint:

    Fusion SW 6919
    Gentian SW 6817

    Materials:

    3 – 8' lengths of 1" x 3" poplar
    6 – 12" piano hinges
    6 cabinet magnet clasps
    table saw or hand saw
    hammer or nail gun
    1 5/8" nails
Phillips screwdriver or drill with Phillips attachment

    1. Cut two pieces of poplar to 12 inches and two pieces to 10 1/2 inches.

    2. To save time, paint the cut lumber before you proceed with the next step.

    3. Miter the corner or ends as if making a picture frame (figure A). Do this with the wood standing on its side to give the box depth.

    4. Place one 10 1/2 inch length at an angle with a 12 inch length, and then nail at the corner to create an "L" shape (figure B). Do this with another 10 1/2 inch length and 12 inch length. Nail the two "L" shapes together forming a frame.

    5. Lightly sand and paint the frames and the mirrors.

    6. Attach a small hinge along the left edge of the 1x3 lumber frame with piano hinge screws at both the top and bottom (figure C). Attach the other half of the hinge to the back side of mirror using piano hinge screws. This would be on the right side of the mirror if viewing the mirror from the back.

    7. Adhere a magnetic clasp (figure D) along the right edge of the 1x3 frame on the opposite side from the hinges at the mid point. Attach a magnet along the back left edge of the mirror at the midpoint so that the magnets hold the "door" closed. Touch up any areas.

    8. Add two saw-tooth picture hangers to the back of the mirror box frame, at the top, and then hang.
