A headboard cleat is designed to allow for easy change out of headboard styles.
Paint:Feather While SW6616 Materials: 1" x 6" x 4" poplar lumber 4' decorative crown molding 5 decorative drawer pulls or knobs drill wooden buttons 2 heavy duty eyelet hooks sandpaper nails hammer
- Begin with a 1" x 6" wide by 4-foot length piece of poplar. Attach the decorative molding to the top edge with several nails--sand, and then paint. On the back of the cleat, make pencil marks for the decorative pulls or knobs approximately two inches from each end. Space the remaining three pulls or knobs equally, and then mark the board at each place with a pencil. From the back of the cleat, drill a screw through to the front at each pencil mark. Screw each knob into place.
- Locate the studs using a stud finder, and then secure the cleat directly into the studs. If you don't have a stud finder, use butterfly "mollies" or plastic wall anchors to secure the cleat. Screw the cleat into place at approximately 60 inches from the floor using wood screws (figure A). Countersink the holes, and then cover them with decorative wooden buttons. Add two metal eyelet hooks to the bottom for attaching headboard pieces (figure B). Touch up any areas on the headboard to complete the project.
