  • From "DIY to the Rescue"
    episode DTTR-209

With the room expanded, the walk-in closet enclosed by a pocket door, and the walls covered by a fresh coat of paint, homeowner Stacy Thomas and host Amy Devers work with a professional to patch the carpet.

    Materials:

    Foam
Carpet scrap to match existing carpet
    Utility knife
    Tack strips
    Seam tape
    Carpet iron (heat seamer)
    Carpet tractor

Note: The four professional tools used for this job -- the carpet iron, carpet tractor, knee kicker and trimmer -- can be rented for about $90.

    1. Use tack strip along the wall. Nail the strip into place along the wall (where carpet will be pressed onto the teeth to hold it in place). Next, cut the pad to fit the space needed.

    2. Next, check the carpet nap to make sure it follows the direction of the existing carpet. Run your hand back and forth over both pieces to check. Once you have determined the direction for the scrap, cut scrap to fit.

    3. Use seam tape just under the seam and a carpet iron (figure A) to activate the seam tape and secure the scrap. Use a carpet tractor (figure B) to securely press the carpet to the seam tape to create a good bond. Position something heavy over the area to set the seam.

    4. Use a knee kicker (figure C) to stretch carpet to the tack strip. Always work down the length of each wall to the innermost corner. Use a hammer to press the carpet onto the teeth. Trim the excess (figure D), press carpet down under drywall and install trim.

    Finishing Touches

The crew adds new lighting, window treatments and wall decor to make the room cozy and chic, while the Thomases move their bed into the space where the old closet used to be. Stacy Thomas is thrilled to not wake up to the sight of an open closet every morning, and the newly expanded bedroom is just what the couple hoped for.
