    The completed wall niche.
With the major jobs complete, carpenter Nathan Haun creates a wall niche that will add attractive housing for Heather Bothe's cross collection.

    Materials:

    Table saw
    Tape measure
    Hammer
    Nail gun
    1 sheet 3/4" birch plywood
Primer and paint in shade of choice (optional)
    Compound miter saw
    2-1/2" finishing nails
    Carpenter's square
    Utility knife
    1 - 2" x 8" fluted casing

    1. Measure and mark the desired location for the wall niche. In this example, the niche will be 26-1/2" across and 18" high.

    2. Score the marks with a utility knife and use a hammer to knock out the drywall (figure A).

    3. Cut four pieces of 3/4" birch plywood to 26-1/2" (or your desired measurements) and 3-1/2" wide. Prime the cut pieces if you are planning on painting the niche.

    4. Cut two of the four pieces to 18". These pieces will create the sides of the box.

    5. Place the pieces end-to-edge to create a butt joint and nail with 2" finishing nails.

    6. Cut a piece of 1/4" plywood for the backing and nail. Nail the box into wall studs
      (figure B).

    7. Measure and cut fluted casings (figure C). Overlap the box edges with the flute casings so there is a 1/4" reveal. Nail into wall and add rosettes to corners to finish.

With the new wall niche complete, the DIY to the Rescue crew adds a new ceiling fan, new window treatments and wall color to give the room a finished appearance. The result? After only three days, the Bothes now have a warm slice of Americana in their new abode.
