  • Carpet Tile Installation
  • From "DIY to the Rescue"
    episode DTTR-205

One of the things plaguing Heather was the pink carpet in the Bothe's bedroom. The Rescue crew has a solution sure to add some style -- unique adhesive carpet tiles that will create a graphic pattern in colors to match Heather's Americana décor.

First, host Karl Champley will assist Heather and Bo with the removal of the old carpet. Then, Amy Devers and the entire Bothe family -- including children Harrison and Headley -- will arrange the carpet tiles and adhere them over the old hardwood.

    Materials:

Carpet knife or utility knife with blades
    24" carpenter's square
    Tape measure
    Chalk line
    Tape
    InterfaceFLOR carpet tiles

Note: These installation steps are for InterfaceFLOR carpet tiles; however, most of the steps will be similar for most any brand.

    1. To determine the pattern (so a single tile will lie at the center of the room) you must first determine the center of your room. First, find the center of each wall and divide the width of the wall by two and mark it (figure A). That will give you the center of the wall.

    2. Measure the width of the tile and divide it by two. That will give you the center of the tile.

    3. Place the center of the tile at the wall’s center mark. Then mark the wall at each end of the tile. These will create a cross hair at the center of the room. Use the same steps to mark the opposing wall.

    4. Repeat this process on the two remaining walls to create the spot for the center square.

    5. Stretch a chalk line to those marks and snap it to create a straight line on the floor. Taping over the chalk lines is optional -- however, it will create a more stable line.

    6. Place tile square in center of cross hair (figure B) and work tiles out from that center point. Do not remove cover from adhesive backing. Use multiple colored squares to create any pattern you like (figure C). Pull up and change pattern at any time.

    7. Once pattern is determined, remove backing from two of the four adhesive dots on the back of the carpet tile and smooth into place. (Manufacturer recommends using two of the four adhesives for easy removal.)

    8. The last step is to cut the tiles to fit at the wall. Turn the tile carpet side down, set flush with the wall and mark at both ends where the carpet tile overlaps at the corresponding tile.

    9. Use a carpenter’s square and a utility knife to make a straight clean cut (figure D) on the backside of the carpet tile. When complete, position cut edge against the baseboard (molding will cover it if it is not exactly even).
