Nancy Golden's sketch of the bedroom's layout shows the design problems she faced: the bed (left side of sketch) is a built-in platform, and the fireplace (right side of sketch) is off-center in the long wall opposite the bed.

    Figure A

The master bedroom had great architectural elements -- lots of windows, a river-rock wall with a fireplace -- but no personality. The walls and millwork were all white, the carpet light-colored; the built-in storage areas still had the original boring wood knobs.

Nancy Golden decided to start with the wall color. To emphasize the natural feel of the surroundings, she took her color cues from the rock wall. She knew that if she chose a color that was too light, the rock wall would "pop" and take on too much importance; and if she chose brown tones, the rocks would be diluted and lose importance. So she decided on a deep green to complement the surroundings and add a rich, earthy landscape feel (figure A).

Once the wall color had been added, Golden began to concentrate on furniture placement. A couple of the room's elements were unchangeable: the bed was built on a platform and had to remain where it was, and the fireplace was placed off-center along one of the walls. Golden made a sketch of the room's floor plan to help her determine where she should place the pieces that could be moved. She decided to create a reading-nook effect by placing a large chair and ottoman in one corner between the windows and the fireplace; along another wall she placed rattan pieces -- a loveseat, chair and coffee table. For her fabric colors she chose natural hues, lots of green and a cheery salmon color as an accent.

The Bare Facts: Don't be afraid to use dark colors. Colors add warmth and security to a room.
