Pillows can be used in lots of ways to give your bedroom the feeling of a personal retreat. DIY Decorating & Design host Nancy Golden offers tips.

Pillows layered abundantly against a headboard create a lush feeling. Big luxurious Euro-sham pillows -- European pillows 26" square -- give large headboards an elegant look (figure A). A king-size bed needs about four of them. Layer on standard pillows, and add a little boudoir pillow in front (figure B). Mix pillows of different fabrics and textures (for example, needlepoint, lace and velvet) for interest.

Neck-roll pillows also look great layered in front of a collection of bigger pillows. Make a no-sew cover for a neck-roll pillow by wrapping it in a fancy dishtowel (figure C) and tying a luxurious French wire-ribbon bow around the end (figure D).

A bedroom makeover needn't be expensive. A new window treatment can be created using just one sheet, and a pair of sheets can be used to make a duvet cover.

Don't be afraid to shake things up now and then by using reversible linens or just changing the pillow arrangement on your bed for a more luxurious look.

Add easy-to-make elements to the bedroom to provide drama and turn it into your personal oasis. Make a padded headboard with a tufted-button accent or an elegant canopy that requires very little sewing. Introducing even one or two elements can transform a bedroom.
