The wax ring creates the seal that makes the whole system work properly.
    Toilet Installation

Note: The toilet installed in this project was fully assembled. If installing a toilet that's not already assembled, read and follow the manufacturer's instructions for assembly.

    • Remove the drain cover from the toilet drain. Make sure there is no residue from the old wax ring or caulk remaining.

    • Carefully unwrap the wax ring and center it on the toilet flange. This ring compresses under the weight of the toilet to form an airtight, watertight seal.

    • Slip the closet bolts into place in the toilet flange. Try to position them so they will line up easily with the bolt holes on the toilet base.

    • Slip a nylon washer over each closet bolt, sliding it down to the bottom of the bolt.

    • Lift the toilet over the drain and gently set it into place with the closet bolts coming up through the bolt holes in the toilet base.

Note: This part of the toilet installation always works better with a helper. Toilets are heavy, and it's hard to see the closet bolts when lifting the toilet into place. Try to have a second person on hand to either do the heavy lifting or to guide the toilet into position.

    • Slip a nylon washer over each closet bolt, followed by a metal washer and a nut. Tighten down with an adjustable wrench. Be careful: Over-tightening can crack the toilet base.

    • Attach the water supply line to the toilet, turn on the water at the shut-off and let the toilet tank fill.
