Recessed Cabinet
- Homeowner Andy had the design for the bathroom in mind when he framed out the interior walls of the basement, so the openings in the walls were a good fit for the cabinets. He also framed out cross-pieces between the studs to support the cabinets that were recessed in the walls.
- Remove the cabinet doors and drawers before getting started, both to protect them from damage and to keep them out of the way. Instead of removing the roll-down door mechanism, Andy just made sure it was rolled up and out of the way.
- Set the first cabinet into the opening (figure A). Check the cabinet for plumb and level, adding shims to the bottom and sides as needed.
- Drill pilot holes through the side of the cabinets into the studs and attach with cabinet screws.
- Install other recessed cabinets in the same manner. Amy and Andy slipped a second cabinet in above the first (figure B).
