When you're building a new shower from scratch, it's easy to add a built-in bench. Host Amy Matthews shows how to frame it up.
Materials:2x4 lumber tape measure miter saw safety glasses framing nailer 2-foot level
Framing Shower Bench- Measure the space and sketch out a rough design for the shower bench. The bench in this project is simple: a rectangle made from 2x4s, supported by the wall studs and two legs.
Use a miter saw to cut 2x4 lumber to length for the top of the bench.Safety Alert: Always wear safety glasses and use caution when working with a miter saw or other power saw. Lay out the four pieces to form the rectangular top of the bench and secure with a framing nailer (figure A).Safety Alert: Always wear safety glasses and use extreme caution when working with a framing nailer or any power nailer. Remember, these tools can drive a nail instantly through wood or a hand or foot. Position the rectangle at the correct height for the top of the bench and nail one corner to the wall stud. Level the bench and nail the other end to a wall stud.Measure and cut legs for the front of the bench from 2x4 lumber and attach with the framing nailer.Measure and cut 2x4 cross-pieces to give the top of the bench extra support. Nail these into place with the framing nailer. The bench will be covered with cement board and tiled along with the rest of the shower (figure B). A marble bench top will serve as the access panel for the shower's steam unit.
