    1. Cut two pieces of 3/4" plywood 16 x 31 inches for the sides of the box and two pieces of plywood 30 x 31 inches for the front and back. Glue and nail the side pieces between the front and back (figure A). Now you have a 30" x 17-1/2" x 31" box without a bottom or top. For the bottom, cut a piece of plywood 30 x 17-1/2 inches, and then attach it to the bottom of the rectangle with glue and 1-1/2" finish nails.

    2. Make the top by cutting another piece of plywood 30 x 17-1/2 inches (figure B). Attach it to the top of the box with hinges (figure C).

    3. Add the side and back cleats by cutting a 1 x 6 inch piece of lumber to the following lengths: two pieces—17-1/2 inches, and one piece 31-1/2 inches. Add the cleats to the sides and back by lining up the lumber with the top edge of the box so that half of the lumber is below the top edge and the other half is exposed. Glue and nail into place.

    4. Fill any holes or gaps with wood putty, and then sand to a fine finish when the putty is dry. Paint the desired color with two coats of high quality, latex based paint n a semi gloss finish. For added beauty and interest, add trim molding to the front and sides of the box and embellish with cushions and pillows.
