    episode DBTR-310

Homeowners Nate and Carolyn bring host Amy Matthews up to date on the work that has been done thus far on the second story of their house. The cramped rooms were demolished and contractors were hired to add two dormers. Once the new dormers were in, Nate and Carolyn decided to add a skylight as an additional light source and to act as a vent.

    Installing Skylight

    1. Measure and mark desired location for skylight in rafters (figure A). Take measurements for the new headers and use a circular saw to cut 2x10s to size.

    2. Tap headers into place and secure them with a framing nailer (figure B). Double them up for maximum strength.

    3. Nail 2x10s to the rafters to act as backers (figure C).

    4. Add joist hangers to carry the headers and support the skylight on the roof (figure D).

    5. Drill out the four corners and drive nails into them to use as reference points when you get out on the roof (figure E).

    6. Pull up shingles in area of roof to be removed. Some shingles will need to be cut using a straight edge and a utility knife (figure F). Fold back the shingles that will later be covered with flashing.

    7. Snap a chalkline between the four nails (figure G). Cut along the lines with a circular saw (figure H).
