  • Painting and Toilet Installation
  • From "Bathroom Renovations"
    episode DBTR-305

The new toilet is set for installation, but to avoid having to paint around it, a coat of paint is first applied to the bathroom walls using a power paint roller.

    Painting

    drop cloths
    tape
    paint brushes
    paint roller
    paint tray
    primer
    power roller

    Toilet Installation

    close-quarter pipe cutter
    shut-off valve
    adjustable wrenches
    hammer
    closet bolts

    Painting With Power Roller

    1. It's a good idea to spread professional quality canvas drop cloths over the floor and fixtures (figure A). If any paint is spilled, it won't soak through.

    2. Tape off counters and trim (figure B), then add a coat of primer (figure C).

    3. Assemble power roller following manufacturer's instructions and apply a coat of paint to the walls (figure D).

    Toilet Installation

    1. Trim supply line with a close-quarter pipe cutter and attach shut-off valve using adjustable wrenches (figure E).

    2. Tap out center of toilet flange with a hammer, then add the closet bolts and wax ring (figure F).

    3. Set toilet on nice and straight (figure G). Set the nuts onto the closet bolts, then tighten with an adjustable wrench.

    4. Attach supply line to toilet and shut-off valve, then turn on the water at the main.
