Materials

speed square
chalkline
thinset
1/4" x 1/4" square-notch trowel
margin trowel
3/8" spacers
rubber gloves
sponge

Tiling Floor

1. To lay tile on the diagonal, put a speed square in the corner you are starting from and snap a chalk line (figure A).

2. Cut a few tiles on the wet saw and lay them out on the floor for a dryfit (figure B). You should mix tiles from different boxes to account for the color variations.

3. Backbutter the tiles with thinset using a square-notch trowel (figure C). The slate tile thickness can vary up to 7/16" of an inch so add extra thinset if necessary to make up the difference.

4. Hold the trowel almost vertically to get the maximum coverage of thinset.

5. Place spacers between each tile (figure D).

6. Sponge extra thinset off the top of tiles before it sets (figure E).
