Materials:

Install Sub-floor

1/4 inch birch underlayment
Circular saw
Pneumatic stapler
1 3/8 inch quarter-round staples

Laying Floor Tile

Skimcoat
Paddle mixer
Bucket
Kneepads
Flat trowel
Putty knife
Gloves
Eye protection
Mask
PVC tile adhesive
Tile adhesive trowel
Cloth
Utility knife
Straight edge
100 lb. roller

Laying PVC Floor Tile

1. First, mix a batch of skimcoat to smooth out the underlayment. Combine the mix with water in a bucket, and mix until smooth (figure A).

2. Apply the skimcoat to the underlayment with a flat trowel, creating a thin layer (figure B).

3. After 15 minutes, when the skimcoat is dry, use a putty knife to scrape off any high spots (figure C).

4. Mark the center of the room with a chalk line so the flooring lines up evenly around the room (figure D).

5. Mix up the PVC tile adhesive according to the directions. This is powerful stuff, so protect yourself and be careful when mixing (figure E).

6. Apply the adhesive to the floor with a special trowel, provided by the flooring company (figure F).

7. Place the tiles on the floor, and push gently (figure G). If any adhesive seems up through the seams, quickly wipe it away with a soft cloth (figure H).

8. Rent a 100 pound roller from any home store, and go over the entire surface once the adhesive is dry (figure I).
