In this second of three episodes of Bathroom Renovations, all the design elements of the room are coming together. Host Amy Matthews and homeowners Rachel and Sean are tiling the walls with a combination of white ceramic and aqua glass, and hanging wallpaper that adds some bold color to this kid-friendly bathroom.

The bathroom was anything but kid friendly...
|
| |

with countertops too high and decor too drab, the space was in need of an uplift.

When the work was complete, this bathroom was changed...

to a room any child would love!

V-notch trowel scraper wet saw safety gloves and glasses Building Tile Frame pencil table saw construction adhesive clamps Hanging Wallpaper utility knife scissors flat edge laser level natural sponge Grouting Tile float sponge rubber gloves Random Pattern Wall Tile 1. Determine your design (figure A). 2. Use a laser level to mark the location of the lowest full tile piece, usually about 2" above the tub lip. 3. Nail a batten board to the wall at the mark to support the tiles so they dont slide down on the mastic (figure B).
4. Measure and mark the center of the wall and use that as a starting point for the tile pattern.5. Dry fit the tiles to determine where the pattern will end at the corner of the wall (figure C). 6. Use a 3/16th inch V-notch trowel at a 45-degree angle to spread the mastic on the wall (figure D). 7. From the center line, start placing tiles out towards the wall along the batten board (figure E).
8. When you get to a spot where your accent tile will go, skip that spot and continue laying the rest of the row (figure F). Then, scrape away the mastic in that area (figure G) and press a half-piece of tile smooth-side down in the spot to hold its place as you lay the next row of tiles (figure H).
9. To make cuts for the corner, determine how much needs to be cut off, then set the fence on the wet saw and run the tiles through (figure I).10. Back-butter the chair rail pieces with mastic (figure J), and press into place (figure K).
11. Once the mastic has set up, pop out the half-piece tile spacers (figure L).12. Back-butter the glass accent tiles and press them into place, give them a slight twist to secure (figure M).
