  • Tin Ceiling Installation
  • From "Bathroom Renovations"
    episode DBTR-205

In this episode of Bathroom Renovations, we will add a steel "tin" ceiling with matching cornice to the 12-foot high ceiling. The newer toilet will stay, but we’ll replace the old worn pedestal sink with a new one that matches the toilet. All the '70s style faucets and hardware will go, replaced with period reproductions in bright chrome. Finally, we'll patch some loose floor tile, and build a frame for the large plate glass mirror on the wall.

    Let's get started!

    Tin Ceiling Installation

    1. Measure the ceiling to see how the plywood will best lay.

    2. Find the ceiling joists and make a mark on the wall as a reference point when hanging the plywood (figure A).

    3. Apply a bead of construction adhesive on the back of the plywood for extra support (figure B).

    4. Secure the plywood into the ceiling joists using 2-1/2 inch deck screws, about every 10 to 12 inches (figure C).

    5. Create the layout pattern of tin tiles.

    6. Start by finding the center of the ceiling.

    7. Use a chalk line to mark the center line.

    8. Measure 12 inches on both sides of your center mark and snap the lines. This creates the spacing for the center row of tile.

    9. Drill through the pre-stamped nail divots on the tile (figure D).

    10. Use steel nails to attach the tiles to the ceiling (figure E).

    11. Tiles will overlap at the edges, so lay out the tile from the back of the room towards the door so that the finished product looks seamless (figure F).
