Drawer Modifications From "Bathroom Renovations" episode DBTR-204

Amy and Kelli modify the cabinet drawers to make room for the sink plumbing. Then, they create a tip-out drawer for storage.

Modify Drawers

1. Mark drawer for the cut out while the drawer is still in the cabinet (figure A).

2. Remove the drawer.

3. Cut 1x8 boards to create a horseshoe box (figure B).

4. Apply an adhesive made for bonding wood to the 1x8 boards (figure C).

5. Line up the boards on the marks and nail through the bottom and the back (figure D).

6. With a jigsaw, cut out the hole (figure E).

Tip-out Drawer

1. You need the tip-out to clear the countertop. To do this, use a pencil held at the countertop height (figure F), tip the drawer forward (figure G) and mark (figure H).

2. Cut the drawer off to length (figure I).

3. Cut along the tip-out mark at an arc or a straight line.

4. Use a piece of the old drawer and attach it to the back of the tip-out (figure J).

5. Using a jeweler’s screwdriver, attach the piano hinge to the drawer and the other end to the cabinet (figure K).
