Window Restoration

1. Remove the stop. If the screws are stripped, just pull it off with a pry bar (figure A).

2. Remove the lower sash (figure B), the middle piece called the parting stop (figure C), and slide the upper sash down (figure D). Cut the ropes, and pull the upper sash out.

3. Remove the old pulleys (figure E).

4. Open up the weight pocket and remove the old weights (figure F). Stuff the pocket with insulation (figure G); this will improve energy efficiency.

5. Add a shim to the blind stop to create the correct spacing for the new window. Staple the access panel in place (figure H), and attach the retainer clips (figure I).

6. Snap in the jamb liners and sash stub (figure J).

7. Cut the old windows down to fit the new jamb liners (figure K).

Safety Alert: Wear safety equipment in case there’s lead in the old paint.

8. Route a groove in the window to receive the pin to connect to the jamb liner (figure L).

9. Cut another groove for the weather stripping. Tap the stripping into place with a hammer (figure M).

10. Install the windows (figure N).
