    1. The homeowners chose to have the old tile, sink and bathtub refinished. New color will be bonded right to the original fixture.

Note:There are kits available so DIYer's can tackle this project on their own, but a homeowner is limited in the strength of the products that can be used. A DIY kit will be rolled on the glossy surface with a brush or roller whereas a professional will use strong chemicals that will etch or degloss the surface. It is put on with a spray system that gives it the look and feel of porcelain, and the durability is much greater. It is much more expensive to put in new tile and fixtures, that to resurface the old ones.

    2. After giving the tub a good cleaning, Mike started to etch the surface. He brushed the etching on (figure A). The etching solution contains powerful acids, so it is essential to wear a respirator, chemical gloves and goggles. The etching eats into the glaze that is baked onto the porcelain surface.

    3. After brushing it on, it was worked into the surface with a nylon scrubbing brush like you use to clean the barbecue drill (figure B).

    4. Once the solution was applied, it took 15 minutes to work -- opening the pores of the porcelain so the finish coat would adhere. He then wiped and rinsed the acid solution away with water. You could see how the acid ate away at the glass finish on the tub.

    5. Mike then wet sanded the tub to remove any chalky residue which could keep the finish from adhering.

    6. The last step of the prep was to repair any of the imperfections and cracks in the grout lines with a special putty applied with a razor blade (figure C).

    7. After the putty hardened, it was sanded to a perfectly smooth surface (figure D).

    8. After prepping all the surfaces, and masking the areas that were not to be painted, it was time to start the refinishing.

Note: The spray was hazardous so Mike put a special high volume blower in the window to dry out most of the overspray and fumes.

    9. Before the refinishing, Mike donned the complete safety ensemble -- Tyvek suit, mask, goggles and gloves.

    10. The first application is a white primer. It goes on all the surfaces (figure E) -- starting with the sink, counter and tub. The primer dries quickly, in 15 to 20 minutes.

Note: Before spraying the walls, the tub and sink were covered to prevent any overspray mist from settling on those surfaces.

    11. Once the primer was dry, the first coating of the almond color was applied. This finish is a very tough, acrylic polyurethane.

Note: Refinishers used to use epoxy paint, but that can take up to a week to cure. The polyurethane finish will cure in about four hours, so you can use the bathroom much sooner. The other problem with epoxy is that it has a tendency to yellow over time.

    12. Mike applied four coats of the almond polyurethane.

In the third segment a new toilet and a new outlet are installed.
