    1. Disconnect the supply lines and drain all the water out of the tank and bowl.

    2. Unscrew the closet bolts (figure A). If very rusted, they can be sawed off with a hacksaw.

    3. Lift the tank off the bowl and remove, and then carefully lift the bowl.

    4. Seal the drain hole with a pressure test plug to prevent sewer gas from entering the room (figure B).

    5. The first step in removing the wallpaper is to check to see if the wallpaper can be peeled off the wall by picking at the corner of it.

DIY Tip: Place strips of tape on the mirror before you remove it, in case it breaks.

    6. On newer wallpapers, the vinyl can be peeled right off, but in older wallpaper, you have a couple of options -- you can use a steamer or a chemical solution. A steamer system was used to remove this wallpaper.

    7. Go over the wall with a scoring tool (figure C), applying light pressure so the nick marks only go through the paper, not into the wall.

    8. Dip the Wallwik sheets into a bucket of solution that consists of one ounce of dissolver in one gallon of warm water.

Note: The solution is safe to handle -- it is similar to dish soap.

    9. When the sheets are soaked, lay them on the walls, smoothing out any air bubbles from the top down (figure D).

    10. Lay the next sheet on, leaving a small gap between the sheets.

    11. After the sheets are on, use the pressure sprayer to douse the sheets (figure E), keeping them nice and wet. The dissolver will start to seep into the wallpaper.

    12. Wait about 15 minutes for the dissolver to do its job.

    13. Remove the sheets from the wall and peel off the wallpaper, using a putty knife for stubborn pieces.

In the second segment work begins on refinishing the surface.
