    Cabinet and Sink Installation

    1. The contractor put tempered glass in the shower and put the cabinets together.

    2. The plan for the cabinets is that they will sit 16 inches off of the floor and there are four slabs of granite that will act as a countertop -- one on each of the vanities, one on the medicine cabinet, and one on the new wall.

    3. Using a laser level, mark the level line for the countertops. Then find a plumb line through the center of the wall-mounted spout to make sure the sinks and faucets are centered (figure A).

    4. Find the center on the cabinet and allow a quarter inch for the lip on the end of the cabinet.

DIY Tip: Mark the laser line with a pencil (figure B) so you can always see the reference line in case the laser level light is blocked during installation.

    5. Mark the drain location on the back of the cabinet, then drill a hole with the hole saw for the drain pipe.

    6. Because these cabinets are sitting 16" off the floor, stack some lumber to hold them in position until they are attached. Use shims to adjust the height.

    7. Once in position, screw the cabinets to the wall with a hammer drill. Mark off the drill bit with tape (figure C) -- about one inch. That will get you through the cabinet cleat and the tile -- and keep you from going too far. Now, secure it with washers and screws.

    8. A backerboard installed before the wall was tiled holds them firmly in place.

    9. If a cabinet doesn't come in the depth you need it in, you can build a box beam to furr it out from the wall (figure D). You can then hang the cabinet on the box beam and it will be flush with the face frame.

    10. Place the countertops on the cabinets, and mark the sink drain holes. Cut out the hole with a jigsaw.

    11. Attach the surface-mount sinks to the countertops with the J-bolts and retaining rings that come with the sinks (figure E).

    12. Attach the faucets according to the directions.
