    Finish Coat of Cement

    1. The homeowner had professionals come in and finish the tiling. It took two guys two full days to complete the tiling.

    2. The base coat for the concrete floor was laid in the first segment. The floor will ultimately be a half-inch thick, but you can only do a quarter inch at a time. The first coat went right over the electrical in-floor heating. The cement will hold the heating elements in place.

    3. There are different options in types of color and finishes for your concrete floor. The rubber stamps you use are imprinted from natural materials (figure A). The distributor can send you samples.

    4. The first thing you need to do is check to see if the consistency of the cement is right for the press. To do that, press your thumb into the cement and make sure it doesn't release onto your hand. You want a little bit of give to the cement so that you can make the imprint.

    5. You can pour some concrete strips outside and then place the stamps down and walk on them (figure B) to get a feel for it before you start on your real floor.

    6. In addition to the texture options, there are color options for the cement floor. There is a pigment that you can mix in with the cement and lay it down. A second option is to do an acid wash. Just mix the wash and lay it over the top of the cement with a sponge brush (figure C). It actually becomes part of the cement.

    7. The finish coat is made up of two compounds that get mixed together on the floor. The first mix is a thin bonding agent that will help provide a good adhesion between the base coat and the finish coat. The second mix is the polymer cement to which you will add the pigment. Like paint, you will mix it to a preset ratio (figure D) until you get the color that you want.

    8. After making sure the base is nice and clean, pour down the bonding agent in a small area and smooth that out with a rubber squeegee.

    9. The color mix goes on top of that. Spread it with a gauge rake. A gauge rake has small teeth (figure E) that can be adjusted to the proper depth.

    10. Smooth it out one more time.

In the last segment, the color floor is stamped.
