More Tiling and Utility Talk- Mix a batch of fully modified white thinset.
- Use a 1/4" x 1/4" square notch trowel to apply thinset to the front (vertical) portion of the tub deck (figure A) because it applies a thicker layer of thinset. You want more mud here so that the tiles won't fall off. The batten board also keeps the tiles from moving down as the mud dries.
- Place the tiles, using a piece of wet, 3/16" cord as a spacer (figure B). Leave the cord in place for 20 minutes, and then remove.
- Wipe any excess thinset off the tile before it begins to dry.
- Use a wet saw to make straight cuts, and a grinder with a diamond blade to make contour cuts (figure C). For the contour cuts, it is easiest to mark them with a grease pencil from underneath.
Note: Always order 10 percent more tile than you need because of waste from cuts and breakage. - With the new shower and tub, the homeowner's 50-gallon hot water tank is not going to be enough. A 50-gallon tank will usually provide hot water for approximately an hour. You have a couple of options for water heaters you can go to a commercial type water heater that is very large, or you can double up and put an additional water heater in. The homeowner chose a tankless water heater that is actually piped inline. As the water goes through the main hot water heater, it goes through the tankless system and a series of heaters (figure D) and out into the bathroom. The tankless water heater does not actually use any electricity unless you are running out of water. When it is on, it takes 120 amps and 240 volts and that is a lot of electricity.
- If you need an additional hot water tank for a large project, you may also need additional electricity possibly 200 amps or more. The electrical company would need to come out and pull more power from the pole and that could cost approximately $3,000.
In the third segment, the concrete floor is poured. Next: Finish Coat of Cement
