    Installing Waterproof Shower System

    1. The inside of the steam shower needs to be completely waterproofed. A Schluter Shower System will be installed. It is different from other shower systems because normally you have the tile, mortar, and whatever other materials that are underneath that. The moisture and water get in through the tile and into the mortar and that becomes a hot bed for mold and mildew. It also causes the adhesive not to work and your tiles come off.

    2. With the Schluter System, you have a membrane (figure A) that will cover all the area in the shower that will be tiled. It will prevent water from going through.

    3. You also have a pre-formed tray that you will be able to cut easily for the size of your shower. It creates a nice slope down to the drain area (figure B).

    4. To adhere the membrane to the surfaces, mix a batch of standard, non-modified thinset. Mix it to a fairly thin pancake batter consistency.

Note: Non-modified means it has no latex and will adhere more quickly.

    5. If there are cement board walls in the shower, soak them with a wet sponge before applying the thinset so they won't absorb too much moisture.

    6. Apply thinset to the wall using a 3/16" V-notch trowel.

    7. The membrane is made out of polyethylene and is easy to cut with a utility knife. Cut it to fit the wall and ceiling.

    8. Hang the membrane on the wall like wallpaper. Smooth it with your hand first, then use a clean flat finish trowel, working from the center out, to remove all the air bubbles (figure C).

    9. Once the walls are covered, you are ready to put the polystyrene pan on the floor.

    10. Apply a thicker batch of thinset onto the floor and spread it on using a 1/4" x 3/8" square notch trowel this time.

    11. After laying the pan into the floor, wiggle it a bit to set it in the mud.

    12. Apply more thinset to the drain hole, and drop in the drain flange (figure D). It will be connected later to the drainpipe below.

    13. All that is left to do is cover the tray with the membrane, cover the ceiling and then do the corners. It will then be watertight and you are ready to tile.
