Building the Tub Deck- Take measurements for the tub placement. The tub should have a spec sheet that came with it and you can use that to draw a diagram of where to place the tub. Start by taking some measurements to mark off where the cabinetry will meet the tub deck and then snap a chalk line to make the mark. Do the same for the outside of the deck.
Note: You can spray hairspray over the chalk line to keep it in place. - Cut 2 x 4's to the length and height of the deck to make the framework (figure A).
- Nail the 2 x 4's together, creating the framework for the deck, then nail the frames to the floor. Be sure to check the frame with a level as you go.
- Mark the height of the frame on the wall, and nail a 2 x 4 cleat to the wall (figure B).
- Add another support 2 x 4 across the frame if using more than one sheet of plywood to cover the deck. Check the plywood for a dry fit.
- Squeeze a thick line of Liquid Nails adhesive on the top of the frame. The Liquid Nails will ensure that you won't get any bounce in the board when you lay down the tiles. Lay the plywood in place, and nail it down every 6" around the edge.
Note: 8-penny ring shanks secure the plywood and won't work themselves out over time. - Lay out the tub template to determine its placement on the deck, staple it to the plywood, and then mark all the way around (figure C).
- Drill starter holes with a paddle bit just inside the mark, then use a jigsaw to cut around the template.
- Use a hammer to pound out the inner plywood (figure D), leaving the hole for the tub.
