    Installing the Floor

    1. The painting has been completed and the plumbing redone. It is time now to install the floor. The homeowner (Gail) chose sisal flooring to install in her bathroom. Sisal is a woven vinyl and is very sturdy (figure A).

    2. Reverse roll the flooring a few days before you are ready to install it in order to allow it to lay flat.

    3. Make a template of the bathroom floor with rosin paper. Lay one edge flush with the wall, but overlap it at the ends about 6" to 10". Carefully jab your utility knife into the corner and slice upward. This makes a relief cut which allows the paper to lay flush against the wall. Fold the paper back, lay it to the wall and cut along the edge (figure B)

    4. Continue the process until the paper lays perfectly flat around the perimeter of the space.

Note: Use a new blade, and change blades often or you will rip the paper instead of slice it.

    5. The paper will probably not be wide enough, so unroll another layer so it will overlap the first.

    6. Work slowly and carefully around the doorframe. If you make mistakes, just use tape to patch things up.

    7. When you overlap the paper, instead of taping the seams, use a spray adhesive. If you put the tape on the center seam and then start moving the paper, there will be a little movement in the tape and can cause you problems when you try and cut the flooring.

    8. After spraying a couple of passes, hold the pieces apart for a few seconds to let the adhesive tack up, then lay the edges together (figure C). Press the edges together.

    9. Check all the edges of the paper to make sure it didn't move any. If everything looks okay, loosely roll the paper template back on itself and take it outside.

    10. Roll out the sisal and place the template down. Lay it with the grain, because it will make it easier to clean.

    11. Tape the edges of the template down every few feet so it won't shift (figure D).

    12. Slide a piece of plywood underneath the flooring to create a safe cutting surface.

    13. Use a utility knife to cut along the edges of the template (figure E). The flooring has a thick vinyl backer, so you will have to apply good pressure. Work slowly and make sure to change the blades as soon as they start to get dull.

    14. Position the sisal onto the bathroom floor. If your bathroom is very small, you can just use double-sticky tape to put it on the floor instead of gluing it down. The shoe will cover the edges.

In the last segment the new pedestal sink and toilet will be installed -- and the finishing touches will be applied to this "Cottage" bathroom renovation.
