    Setting Tile Rail

    1. Start by establishing a reference line around the room using a 360-degree laser level.

    2. When creating a tile rail around a room, there are a number of factors that determine the height of the tile. In the bathroom redone on the show, they wanted the glass tile to fall between the two shower valves. They also wanted to be sure the black cap tiles over the counter didn't land in the middle of the switch plates (figure A). Look at the big picture when planning your layout and make adjustments up or down.

Note: Before you tile, you can protect your new floor with heavyweight rosin paper. It is commonly used under hardwood flooring and makes a great inexpensive protector.

    3. Start in the corner and make a miter cut at a 45-degree angle, otherwise it will be too short.

    4. Make a series of reference marks for the top and bottom tiles (figure B), that way you will know how many tiles to put on the wall. Set the wet saw table to 45-degrees to make miter cuts.

    5. Use a 3/16" v-notched trowel to apply the mastic adhesive to the wall. Use mastic adhesive instead of thin set because the mastic creates a strong instant bond so the tiles won't slip down the wall once they are in place.

    6. You can see why the laser line is so handy, a pencil mark would be covered by the mastic (figure C).

Note: Mastic has a working time of 15-20 minutes. If you touch it and it comes off on your finger, then it is still wet and workable. If not, then it has skimmed over and you need to reapply mastic.

    7. Start with a partial glass tile because you want the glass and the black capped tiles to stack (figure D) -- you want to create a modified brick pattern.

    8. When you reach the backsplash, switch to thin set because the tiles have the counter to rest on and won't slip down.

Note: If the wall is irregular, use thin set because it is better for filling in gaps.

In the second segment, the cove base tile is added and the toilet installed.
