Replumbing the Shower- Before you start installing the copper pipes, put spacer blocks behind the faucet and the wall; they also need to be placed behind the shower bar. The spacers are the same thickness as the tile they will be using (figure A). Once the spacers are in place, you can screw the faucet back on.
- You can create a supply line with a series of copper pipes and fittings that will sweat together and attach to the shut-off valves.
Note: Rigid copper was used, and it is often referred to as "hard copper." - Before you solder, use a wire brush to clean the ends of the fittings, making sure they are good and clean so they will form a good seal.
- Apply flux (also called solder paste) with a brush to the outside of the pipe and the inside of the fitting (figure B).
DIY Tip: When soldering, heat the fitting and not the solder (figure C). The heat draws the solder into the gap between the fitting and the pipe to form a watertight seal. - To attach the supply lines to the valves, warp the threads of the valves with Teflon tape. Then, screw on the fittings and tighten them with an adjustable wrench.
Note: Winding Teflon tape clockwise will keep it in place when you attach the fitting. - Attach the 90-degree elbow fittings to both sides and solder in place (figure D).
Safety Tip: When using a torch, watch for the wall catching fire. Keep a spray bottle of water or extinguisher handy just in case.
In the third segment, the tiling project begins.
