    Steps

    1. Tape off areas of the steps that you don't want to accidentally spatter with paint (figure A).

    2. Use kraft paper to protect the step area.

    3. Spray the risers with a coat of primer. This will give the paint a bonding surface.

    4. When the primer is dry, add two coats of satin latex paint in the same shade of the walls (figure B).

    Lighting

If you are inexperienced with electrical wiring, you may want to hire an electrician to install new lighting fixtures. If you do it yourself, an extra set of hands can be helpful while the wiring work is being completed.

The fixtures used in this room are suited for a room with low ceilings. The semiflush mount is a brushed steel with a watery look that complements the soft green paint. The modern design of the glass gives the feeling that it floats in the room, creating a clean, spare look.

Tips: When glass is cut thick, it will typically have a green hue. Also, if you install lighting that weighs more than 50 pounds, make sure the ceiling box is firmly attached to a cross brace or joist.
