    Day One Continued

    Putting Up Tongue-and-Groove Walls

    1. Use unbacked insulation so you don't create a double barrier when you staple the foil barrier to the walls (figure A). Starting at the bottom, work your way up with about a 5" overlap and finally up over the ceiling joists. The foil has a dual purpose acting as both a vapor barrier and a heat reflectant.

Note: Be sure to cut away any existing vapor barrier. You do not want to create a double barrier where moisture can get trapped.

    2. Using a pin nailer, start installing the ceiling boards with the tongue against the wall. The ceiling goes up first so the boards will be supported (figure B) at their ends.

    3. Face nail through the board on each end staying far enough away as to not split the wood. These nail heads will later be covered by trim.

    4. Blind nail remaining boards into the joists through the tongue.

Note: The ceiling will require the most cutting where your board ends meet the walls at an angle.

    5. Use a sliding "T" bevel, measure the angle for your end cuts and transfer that angle to your miter saw.

    6. On each wall, the first board should be fastened with the tongue toward the corner in the same manner as the ceiling.

    7. Continue this process (figure C) until the walls are up. Make sure the tongues and grooves are snug.

In the next segment, the wall will be finished, the heater and benches will be installed, the door and windows will be installed and the interior trim will complete the job!
