Half way through day one -- 4-1/2 hours into the job -- and Ryan and his helper have the frame and rafters up for the sauna room.

Time: 18 hours over two days.

Difficulty Rating: This project rates a 3 on the Weekend Handyman scale.

    Materials:

    Chalk line
    Sliding "T" bevel
    Variety of levels
    Pressure treated 2x4's
    Regular 2x4's
    Furring strips
    Unfaced insulation
    Sauna kit

    Tools:

    Pin nailer
    Framing nailer
    Power miter saw
    Cordless screwdriver
    Framing and speed squares

    Day One

    Notes:

    • When setting up a fitness area, the location is real important. Chose a location where there will not be a lot of traffic so you can keep distractions to a minimum. You can place a sauna on concrete, tile, linoleum or any surface that does not absorb water. Don't install a sauna on carpeting.

    • Check the local building codes and have an electrician make all the required connections.

    • Draw up a plan and send to a sauna company. Allow two to three weeks for the sauna to arrive. Clear the location for the sauna and gather all the tools and materials.

Note: The custom sauna kit will come with everything but the framing lumber, insulation, the wire -- and, of course, the tools.

Putting the Frame Together for the Sauna Floor

    1. Measure and mark rough dimensions for the base lightly with a chalk line.

    2. Lay out pieces for the base plate (figure A) using 2x4 pressure treated wood.

Note: Whenever you attach wood to concrete, you have to use pressure treated wood to keep the moisture out.

    3. To build the three wall sections, cut the top plate that matches the bottom plate.

    4. Mark both plates at the same time to mark the location of the studs.

    5. Once all the pieces are cut and marked according to the drawings, lay them out in their proper position (figure B) and then use a framing nailer to nail all the pieces together.

Note: Check the manufacturer's pressure for your nailer. Larger nailers require higher pressure.

    6. Attach a backer board under the poly where there is no is no stud so you will have something to attach the wall to.

    7. Use several beads of construction adhesive along the base plate. This will provide extra stability and a better seal at the base plate.

      Tip: Use heavy-duty construction adhesive.

    8. Stand the wall in place, check to make sure it is level and then attach the wall section to the nailer. Use a powder actuated nailer (figure C) when attaching boards to concrete.

Tip: You can rent a power nailer at home center stores for approximately $40 a day. It is a real labor saving device when it comes to attaching anything to concrete or floors. Without it you would have to drill first, and then anchor your base plate using several tools and steps.

Tip: Most local codes will require pressure treated lumber any time there is contact with concrete.

    9. Frame a rough opening for the door.

    10. Nail top plate along the top of the wall. This will help tie the three wall sections together and give the whole structure more strength. Attach a 2x4 ledger board across the back of the sauna (figure D). This will support the ends of the ceiling joists.

      Putting Up the Rafters

Expert Tip: The best height for the ceiling is 7 foot or less because you don't want to waste heat. The distance from the seat to the seating should be about 42 inches.

    11. Lay a series of 2x4 ceiling joists, 16" on center, across the top.

    12. You need to have a 6" overhang on the sides (figure E) -- a little longer in the front.

    13. Cut rafters off to create a soffit in the front. Determine the overhang by the shortest rafter.

    14. Put fascia framing up using 16 penny nails.

    15. To complete the framing, place some cross-blocks of wood in for more support, frame the windows, place some furring strips on the back wall, put up the drywall and have an electrician run the wiring for the sauna.

In the next segment, the framing will be completed and the tongue-and-groove walls will be installed.
