  • Moving Appliances Easily
  • Check out these three simple ways to move large appliances.
    From "DIY Weekend"
    episode DIYW-204

Here are some tips to protect your floor anytime you have to move a large appliance.

    Solution One: Carpet Samples
They only cost a couple of dollars a piece and are simple to use. Just flip them upside down (Figure A). If you've got an appliance without wheels, set the appliance on here and you can slide it wherever you need to. If you don't have carpet squares, you can also use cardboard.

    Solution Two: Shims and Hardboard
Even if your appliance has wheels like most refrigerators do, those wheels can still damage the floor. If you haven't moved your fridge for a while those wheels might have seized up. Wedge a shim under each of the front wheels. Then place a sheet of eighth-inch hardboard in front of the shims (Figure B). You can get a four by eight sheet at home centers for about $6. Then just pull and push your fridge up the ramp.

    Solution Three: Nylon Appliance Tracks
For the ultimate in floor protection, use nylon appliance tracks. These plastic glides have a raised edge to form a track for the appliance wheels. The strips can be permanently positioned underneath your fridge. Double-sided tape is used to adhere the track to the floor. Carefully move the appliance onto the tracks and push it into place. Make sure the male end of the track sticks out past the front wheels when the appliance is pushed back into place. When you need to move your fridge again, just snap on additional track pieces (Figure C) and you can safely and easily move the appliance without damaging the floor. When you're done with the tracks, store them right underneath the appliance.
