If food seems to take too long to bake or gets scorched on the outside before it's done on the inside, the culprit may be your oven. Here's how to check the accuracy of its temperature setting and make any adjustments it might need. 1. Get a good-quality oven thermometer. You can check its accuracy by hanging it on the edge of a pan of boiling water. The steam from the water, which is 212 degrees, will heat the thermometer so that it reads 212 degrees. If the thermometer gives you a different reading, you need to replace it. 2. Put the oven thermometer into the oven, and set the oven temperature to 350 degrees. Check the thermometer in 15 minutes. If it doesn't read 350 degrees, you know the oven needs adjustment. 3. To adjust the temperature, pull the oven temperature control knob off the oven. Check on the back of the knob for an adjustment control. Note the starting position of the notches, which represent 10-degree increments. 4. Loosen the screws of the control and move the dial to the appropriate notch. For example, if the oven was 360 degrees, move the dial to the first notch to the left of the starting position. That will set the temperature to 350 degrees. 5. Replace the knob.
