Most of us tend to take our dishwashers for granted, at least until they break down. With a little routine maintenance, though, you can help prevent such problems — and the repair bills that come with them. Follow these steps to ensure a long life for your dishwasher:

    • Remove the lower rack of the dishwasher so you can get to the spray arm. Remove the spray arm and remove any material clogging its openings. Use a stiff wire, such as a straightened paper clip, to dislodge anything that's stuck in the holes.

    • Clean any mineral residue on the arm with hot distilled white vinegar and a plastic scrubber. You may need to soak it in the sink for a while to loosen the residue.

    • Clean the strainer at the bottom of the dishwasher. Pull the strainer out and wash it with a scrub brush in warm, soapy water.

    • Try cleaning any stains inside the dishwasher with a powdered citrus drink, which contains citric acid. Just fill the detergent dispenser and run the dishwasher through one cycle.
