In this segment, a home is made more comfortable and energy efficient by replacing drafty old double-hung windows with a new sash-replacement kit. Rather than having to replace the entire window -- wood frame and all -- this kit allows the do-it-yourselfer to replace only the window sashes.

The replacement kit uses window inserts with a high performance design (figure A) featuring specialized glass spacers and a low-emissivity glass that reflects radiated heat back toward its source. Argon gas between the glass panes prevents transfer heat through the air space.

With the old window elements (sashes, weights and pulleys) removed, work begins on installation of the inserts.

    Materials:

Wood/Clad Tilt Pac ™ 2-Sash window kit (mounting hardware included)
    Hammer
    Nail punch

    Steps:

    1. Nail the metal brackets, spaced evenly, down both sides of the window (figure B). Start about 2" from the top and finish about 2" from the bottom.

    2. Install the new sash stops, which slip into the track at the end of the jamb liner (figure C).

    3. Install the foam gaskets (figure D). With these set in place, the jamb liners will be sealed with the head jamb on the window.

    4. Snap the vinyl jamb liners onto the brackets on the side of the window frame. Start at the top and use your hand to pound the liners into place (figure E).

      • Tip: When installing the jamb liner, make sure that the blind stop leaf (figure F) is not folded under the jamb liner. This will ensure a tight seal over the blind stop.

    5. Use small finishing nails to install the new stop-strip at the top of the frame (figure G). Nail the strip in place with the weatherstripping facing outward.

    6. Work can now begin on the installation of the sash. Pull down and lock the metal clutches in the jamb liners with a screwdriver (figure H).

    7. Place the top sash into the exterior track and ease it into place (figure I), lowering it into the clutches.

    8. Swing the sash up until the top locks into the side-track.

    9. With the top sash in its tracks, it's now safe to slide the sash up (figure J).

    10. The lower sash installs in the interior track in the same way. Once it's in the track, swing it up (figure K) until it locks into place.

    11. With the lower sash seated firmly in the track, slide it all the way down and set the lock (figure L).

    12. Finally, replace the original inside casing using finishing nails (figure M). Use a nail punch to set the nails below the surface.

With the kit installation complete, the result is a weathertight window that looks new, though it still uses the existing window frame (figure N). The time required to install the energy-saving window-kit shown in our demonstration was about one hour.
