Fix #2: Replace Leaky Jalousie Glass WindowWally Conway shows homeowners how to reduce energy loss (and loss of cool air) in their home. In this second project, Stuart learns to remove and replace jalousie glass in a door with solid tempered glass. Sarah learns how to remove and replace weather stripping around drafty doors. Materials: cordless drill utility knife hammer block of wood tempered glass pane (pre-cut to size) quarter-round (enough to fit around frame) nails sandpaper
Steps:- First, bend back the tabs that hold the existing glass panes. Then cautiously slide out each pane of glass (figure A).
- Next, unscrew the frame using a cordless drill making sure to add a little extra pressure to make sure each screw comes out clean. Then, score through any coats of paint that are holding the frame in place using a utility knife (figure B)
Remove the frame from place by tapping it lightly using a block of wood and a hammer (figure C).Next, create a new frame using quarter round. Measure and cut to size (figure D).
Then, sand down the window frame. Before nailing the quarter round in place pre-drill holes to prevent the wood from splitting on the way down (figure E).Once youve got the frame installed on one side of the door, place the pre-cut glass in place (figure F).
Finish by installing another quarter-round frame on the interior of the door (figure G). To complete the look, all thats left to do is paint the trim and clean the glass (figure H).
