    We follow Patrick and his instructor Terry Monks as they perform a scheduled winter maintenance on the central component of the building's A/C system: the centrifugal chiller (figure A). The chiller's main function is to chill and circulate the large amount of water used to cool air for the building. Maintenance is performed in the winter months when the chiller isn't needed. The goal is to keep the machine functioning at optimal levels so that it performs well in the summer months.

    Chiller Maintenance

    Most of the service checks performed on this chiller are done after removing the refrigerant from the system into a holding tank. As mandated by federal law, only EPA-certified technicians can handle refrigerants.

    Basic Tools:

    open and adjustable wrenches
    allen wrenches
    dial indicator
    cleaning solvent
    heavy duty paper towels
    scraper
    grease pump
    refrigerant conservation system
    pneumatic ratchet
    flashlight
    vacuum pump
    vacuum gauge
