    Tips:

    • Anytime you're installing surface-treated products like trim boards on your roof, it's much safer to paint or stain the materials BEFORE hanging them out of reach.

    • Don't get stuck with dirty tools. Kerosene is the best solvent when it comes to removing tar and roofing cement.

    • To loosen an asphalt shingle for repairs, insert a putty knife at the bottom edge and tap gently with a hammer.

    • Ever cook a potato with solar energy? All it takes is a mixing bowl, some aluminum foil, and a suction cup hook. Stick the hook to the bottom of the bowl and then line the bowl's interior with aluminum foil. Push the potato onto the hook and leave the whole thing facing the sun for several hours -- Bon Appetite!

    • A standard cord of wood that measures 8 x 4 x 4 feet produces as much heat as 146 gallons of heating oil, 17,400 cubic feet of gas, 3,300 kilowatt hours of electricity and slightly less than one ton of coal.

    • An easy way to make the most of available solar heat is to make sure that objects do not block sunlight from shining on concrete slab floors and heat-absorbing walls.
