Carol Duvall, host of HGTV's The Carol Duvall Show, shows how to turn even the youngest kids into crafters with gifts for Dad.

    Hand Art

    Materials:

    Paper
    Crayons
    Coloring pens
    Cardboard
    Construction paper
    White glue
    Acetate

    1. Trace around a child's hand or hands, and have the child color them or decorate them as he or she wishes.

    2. Cut a piece of cardboard large enough to frame the picture. Cover with construction paper.

    3. Use another piece of cardboard as backing, the place the artwork on top, followed by a piece of acetate and the construction-paper frame. This makes a perfect Father's Day gift for Dad.

    Variation:

    • Cut out one of the decorated hands, and place it in an acrylic frame (figure A).

    Big Hug

    Materials:

    11" x 17" sheet of construction paper
    Small paper plate
    Scissors
    White glue
    Crayons or colored markers

    1. Cut a strip of construction paper 4" wide by 17" long. Fold each end in toward the middle not quite to the center (figure B).

    2. Cut a circle from the center of a paper plate along the edge where the curve of the paper begins. Use this as a template to trace around on construction paper.

    3. Draw a face on the circle. Or draw a face on the paper plate itself.

    4. Trace around the child's hands on construction paper. Cut out the hands.

    5. Glue one hand on each end of the construction paper strip, with the thumbs facing up. Glue the face to the top of the strip at the center. Add construction-paper cuffs or a hair bow or whatever other touches you like (figure C).

    6. Write "Here's a really big hug" on the inside of the strip. Fold the sides toward the center.
