Q: I'd like to get some ideas for making my own greeting cards. Can you show me the materials I'll need and how to do it? A: (DIY Crafts expert, Debbie Stapley) There are many ways to make greeting cards. Here are some simple approaches that are ideal for making with kids, using mainly materials you probably already have around your hours. Materials: Card-stock and craft paper, various colors Scissors Scalloped-edge scissors Hole punch Decorative hole-punch Craft knift Bone folder (optional) Dimensional paint Rubber stamp Embossing powder Hair-dryer or embossing heat-gun
Steps: - For the first card, start with a piece of card stock and fold it in half across its width. To get a sharp crease, you can use a bone folder (figure A) or other flat tool.
- Using the scalloped-edge scissors, cut around the outside edge of the paper ( figure B). Carefully line up your cuts so that you have a continuous pattern around the perimeter.
- Once you've created a pattern all around the edge, use a hole-punch to enhance the pattern (figure C).
- Depending on your theme, create a cut-out figure to decorate the inside of the card. You can create these from templates, coloring-book designs, cookie cutters, etc. -- or you can freehand them to create your own unique designs. We chose a rabbit design made from a template (figure D).
- Glue the shape onto the inside of the card. To add dimension, use foam double-stick tape to raise the cut-out off the page.
- Decorate your design using dimensional paint, and let the paint dry. We decorated our rabbit with a "tail" made from a pom-pon (figure E).
- Another idea is to emboss the outside of a card using a rubber stamp and embossing powder. For a raised effect, first stamp your rubber-stamp design using glycerine or thick ink (figure F).
- While the stamp is still wet, sprinkle embossing powder onto the stamped portion.
- Pour off the excess powder.
- Use a hair-dryer or embossing gun to heat up and solidify the embossing powder to complete the embossed design (figure G).
- Create a paper frame -- and accent it with cut-outs using a decorative hole-punch -- to highlight the embossed design (figure H).
- A third idea is to design a stamped card, then create a basket-weave frame around the main design by cutting slits around the border with a craft knife, then "weaving" a contrasting strip in and out of the slits (figure I).
