The traditional holiday colors of red and green always look cheerful -- and nothing can compare with the scent of fresh greenery.

Wreaths and garlands don't have to be evergreen: dried materials make lovely seasonal displays too...

...And pine cones are always a good choice for holiday decorating.

    Holiday Evergreen Wreath

Jackie Cicchino demonstrates her techniques for creating fragrant holiday wreaths and garlands.

    Materials:

    12 fresh evergreen branches branches
    3 branches of fresh pine
    Scissors/wire cutter
    20-gauge floral paddle wire
    Pruning or bypass shears
    14" wire wreath form
    2 18" winter berry sprays
    1 large bow

    1. First, precut tips of evergreen branches into 6" pieces.

    2. Precut the wire into 2" to 3" pieces, shape into a U to insert more easily into the form through the cedar and tie it off on the back. Overlap the second layer of cedar, covering the wire from the first layer, so that the wire wrapped around each layer is covered by the next bunch of cedar. Continue adding layers in the direction until the entire form is filled and the last layer has connected with the first.

    3. Embellish the wreath as desired and wire decorative bow directly to the form. To hang wreath, make wire securing bow long enough to create a loop on the backside.

    4. To care for the wreath, mist with water every other day to rehydrate. Keep indoor displays away from direct sunlight and heat.

    Natural Garlands

This garland can be made in sections of 2" to 3" -- which is easier. The sections can then be connected to form the desired length.

    Materials:

Fresh cedar (or other evergreen or dried flower)
    Twine
    20-gauge floral paddle wire
    Scissors/wire cutter
    Pruning/bypass shears
    1" wired ribbon

    1. First, precut cedar branch tips into 2" to 3" pieces.

    2. Cut twine same length as the section. This will act as a guide on which bunches of cedar will be wired.

    3. Continue adding natural material until the garland is finished.

Festive Fact: The poinsettia is native to Mexico. The festive red and green plant is named after America's first ambassador to Mexico, Joel Poinsett.
