Puppet styles can range from cute, fuzzy creatures to dramatic, sinister fairy-tale villains.

Sharon Moyer, a retired teacher, runs her own small-scale theater company -- as a puppeteer. Moyer says the most interesting aspect of the hobby is making the puppets. - Puppets vary in style and mechanics. Marionnettes have strings to control movement from above the puppet, while rod puppets are controlled from below. Hand puppets are a classic style whose creation is as easy as decorating a glove.
- Moyer is creative in her choice of materials and recycles as many household objects as possible. Heads can be made from papier mache, plastic foam or fabric-covered foam. Bodies often take their shape from a liquid detergent bottle, while wire spokes from old umbrellas often become rods.
