To provide accent lighting in Johnny Bench's baseball-themed rec room, a simple floor-lamp was converted into a unique display that incorporates some of Johnny's actual catcher's equipment -- including shin guards, chest protector and catcher's mask.

Johnny's finished display of baseball memorabilia.

    • We began by using a pre-cut table round to create the base for the floor lamp. The piece was cut using a rotary saw to match the shape of an actual home-plate base.

    • A hand-held router was then used to soften the cut edges of the base (figure A).

    • Using a cordless hand-drill and 1-inch paddle bit, holes were cut in the base for the three conduit pipes.

    • Using the metal flange as a guide, the flange was centered over each of the drilled holes, and the outer edge of the flange was traced onto the wood.

    • The hand-held router was used to rout out the traced holes so that the flange could be installed and lay flush with the bottom of the base (figure B).

    • The wood base was then spray-painted black.

    • A second table round was prepared and the edges routed smooth. A light kit was threaded through and finished off using a light-base kit (figure C).

    • Threaded metal supports were fitted through the openings, and the shin-guards, chest protector and catcher's mask were mounted on the upright supports.

    • To finish off the lamp, a shade was installed with the wide end pointing up, and baseballs were glued in place around the base of the shade (figure D).
