Baseball gloves and mitts (figure A) can mean a great deal to baseball aficionados, but coming up with an attractive means of displaying them can be a challenge. Our decorating and carpentry experts were able to devise a way to display and protect them. Here's how they did it.- Use 1x8 poplar boards to create individual display shadowboxes. To create each 15"x15" box, cut the boards to length. For a professional look, miter-cut the ends of the boards at 45 degrees to form the corners of the box.
- Apply wood glue to the mitered edges, then nail the corners for stability using an air nailer (or hammer) and finish nails. For added stability, attach a 1x4 center-strip at the back to serve as both a support piece and mounting strip (figure B).
- Spray-painting the boxes black will help highlight the gloves displayed in them, and help draw attention to them.
- To support the glove inside the box and hold it upright, mini-bats were cut to the length. The end of each cut bat was pre-drilled for a double-sided screw (figure C) that was used to secure the bat section to the bottom of the shadowbox.
- Once you've worked out the placement for all of the boxes, pre-drill and install wall anchors for securing the boxes to the wall using a mounting strip (figure D).
- Once each box is in place, install the bat section that serves as the support, and place the glove onto the support. You may need to arrange the position of the glove to come up with just the right look for the display (figure E).
