The sound of a steel drum or pan is as unique as any we've featured on Handmade Music. Years of training are required even before a maker attempts to build one from start to finish.

	Steps in the "preparation" phase in the creation of a steel drum.

Preparation

Construction was the first phase of this steel drum's evolution. It's steps included sinking, smoothing, shaping, grooving and bubbling. Now the second phase; preparation begins. Preparation literally prepares the drum for the most important step which is tuning.

• Putting tension on the notes and between the note surfaces is the goal of preparation. Getting the metal to "flex" signals a success in preparation. The only way to do that is to redistribute the metal with hammering. This hammering uses several weights and very direct hits.

• The groove lines inserted into the surface previously have served their purpose. Now with a hammer they are removed.
