    Got Bluegrass?

During production of DIY's Handmade Music, members of the renowned bluegrass band Kentucky Thunder graced the series with some great acoustic music performances. Playing in a relaxed and casual setting in a Nashville recording studio, these virtuosos of traditional American music showed just what is possible using the types of instruments crafted by master luthiers like those featured in the series. In fact, in an appropriate pairing of artisan and artist, guitarist Cody Kilby "christened" the Dudenbostel guitar that was made during the first four episodes of the series, taking the newly honed instrument through its paces with some fine acoustic playing.

If you've seen the episodes of Handmade Music, you know how much the music -- heard both as backing soundtrack and in performance interludes -- adds to scope and the feel of the series. Hearing finely crafted instruments in the hands of highly skilled players like these affirms a distinctive double meaning in the phrase "handmade music." We hope that you enjoy the music as much as we do.
The musicians featured in the performance segments:

    • Andy Leftwich, mandolin
    • Cody Kilby, guitar
    • Scott Vestal, fiddle
    • Luke Bulla, banjo
    • Mark Fain, bass

The handmade guitar is modeled after the legendary Martin D-28, originally built in the 1930s and early '40s.
