Eight Ball - "Eight Ball is the best of all amateur games," Laurance says. The object is to sink all of either the solid balls or striped balls. Which ball is determined by the first ball that's pocketed. Pocket the series of balls, then the Eight ball. Whoever sinks the Eight ball wins.
Nine Ball - This game is played with only balls one through nine. Rack the balls in a diamond shape (figure A), with the one ball in the front and the nine ball in the middle.
- Laurance says to hit the one ball as solidly as possible. The balls must be played in rotation from one through nine, and the nine ball is the only one that counts a point. This means whoever sinks the nine ball wins, but there's a catch. The nine ball can be sunk by hitting another ball first, as long as the balls are struck in rotation. For example, let's say balls one through five have been pocketed and the six ball is aligned perfectly to sink the nine ball. As long as the six ball is struck first, if it knocks the nine ball in a pocket, you win. Simple and fun!
